A few weeks ago, I came across this story on my Google alert for youth soccer: A Virginia girl helping to collect and ship used, good condition soccer equipment for a youth girls soccer team in Afghanistan. To read the full story,
click: here. While I do not know a lot about the culture in Afghanistan, I can appreciate that in a war-stricken country where girls do not have the same freedoms as they do here in the United States, they are given an opportunity to have a new sense of self-discovery through a sport, soccer.
On a related note, a book was written about Afghani girls playing soccer: Kabul Girl’s Soccer Club by Awista Ayub. The story seemed fascinating, so I downloaded the book to my Kindle. I hope in a few weeks to have it read and write a follow-up blog book review. In the meantime, to get a different perspective on youth soccer, I invite you to check out the website and read the book! In the meantime, you can read this well-written book review.
